Hearing the Pain of Exile

This psalm is a reminder to us that there are those among us who have been emotionally impaired by a wounded history, who speak harshly from a well of bitter experience.

Often, in the din and clamor of protest against the ancient ills that rile us, we detect voices that sound like hard knights of justice. Before it gets our backs up, we ought to remember that very likely, they speak as victims. The screams we hear come out of the hollows of a lacerated soul.

It is conventional wisdom for those of us who sit comfortably in our pews to talk of biblical “balance.” We tend to judge those who rant and bellow and annoy us with their social justice passions as somewhat obsessive and unstable. Yet the experience of injustice is such that it does make people rise to fever pitch. It is only those who do not feel enough indignation over oppression and victimization, or who have not suffered injury from first-hand experience of cruel powers, who can afford to talk of balance.

Separated by time and cultural distance, I cringe at the psalmist’s vengeful imprecations over Babylon. Yet, perhaps like most modern people, it is only because I do not know enough of what it means to belong to “Zion,” to have lost a homeland that is tied up, not just with one’s sense of nationality, but also with one’s religious identity.
